Originally established in the National Hockey League in 1967 as the Minnesota North Stars, the team relocated to Dallas in 1993 and played their first game on October 5, 1993. In their first season, the Stars made the playoffs by winning 42 games and recording 97 points. In 1999, the Stars won 51 games, finished with a league’s best 114 points, and went on to win the Stanley Cup Final. The Stars have also won numerous division titles, conference championships and Presidents’ Trophies. Originally named the Minnesota North Stars, the team was renamed the Stars upon moving to Dallas, since Texas is known as the Lone Star State.

On Saturday, March 8, 2014, the Dallas Stars honored hockey icon Mike Modano by retiring his Number 9. The seven-time NHL All-Star played 20 of his 21 NHL seasons with the Stars organization. Inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012, he became the franchise leader in nearly every statistical category, as well as finishing his career as the all-time leading American-born scorer in NHL history. Instrumental in helping the Stars capture the 1999 Stanley Cup championship, he represented Team USA at the Olympic Games on three separate occasions.
